Alternatives Kicks off Holiday Campaign
The night Santa cried... Each year the Madison County Solidarity Labor
Council sponsors a Christmas party for the
families in the shelter. It is a
wonderful, fun evening complete with a visit from Santa. Santa presents
each child a gift from their "wish list."
In 2007, a mother and her three
children had entered shelter just days before the party. This family was one of
the most severely abused families our staff had ever seen. Mom had been physically and emotionally abused to the point
she had lost all feeling of self value. Dad had forced the children to
live like animals, making them eat their food from plates on the floor. They
had never received a birthday or Christmas gift. They had been made to feel
they were "disposable."
As Santa called their names, they slowly made their
way to him. Santa sensed their hesitation. He spoke to them softly and gave
them their gifts. The other children who had already received their gifts
immediately tore open the package-like most children do. These children looked
at Santa in wonderment. They were not sure how to accept a gift or kindness.
One of our staff stepped forward to help them open the gifts. Santa turned to
me with tears in his eyes. He knew these children were suffering. The moment
touched the hearts of everyone in the room.
Every day at the shelter is filled with mixed emotions. We see
suffering, fear, hopelessness, gratitude, and joy. Your financial
support helps us continue to make the shelter a safe place for
families.
